Warhammer 40k Speed Freeks hits 1.0, ditches all microtransactions

Warhammer 40k Speed Freeks is zooming out of early access as part of the Skulls showcase, and it's ditching all microtransactions.

There were a lot of exciting reveals during last year's Warhammer Skulls showcase. From the highly anticipated Mechanicus 2 to more sneak peeks at the then-unreleased Space Marine 2, Warhammer 40k fans ate well last year. As the 2025 iteration of the much-beloved community stream looms and Space Marine 3 continues to chug along in the background, one of last year's most popular reveals is finally hitting 1.0. After just under a year in early access, Warhammer 40k: Speed Freeks is finally zooming into full release mode, and, in a somewhat surprising twist, it's ditching all in-game microtransactions.

If you can't keep up with all of the new Speed Freeks is essentially uber violent Rocket League, where the football is other players. Revolving around the Orks, one of the tabletop game's most beloved factions, you're tasked with battling it out across various themed locales in intense, high-octane duels where the aim is, quite simply, to not get blown up.

There's the base 8-player co-op racing mode Deff Rally, which is reminiscent of Mario Kart if you traded out the cutesy power-ups for big guns and gnarled machinery, and also Kill Konvoy, which tasks you with protecting (or destroying) the aptly named Stompa from an onslaught of enemy bombs. It's chaos, it's explosive, and it's the embodiment of Warhammer 40k's silliness.

Coming into 1.0, Wired Productions will be taking the publishing reigns instead of Plaion, with development still in the hands of Caged Elephant. The headliner here is that all microtransactions have been removed, and while you'll still have 12 months to spend your hard-earned Teef, all of the game's new cosmetics and items will be purchasable using in-game currency going forward.

If you're looking for some extra goodies, though, various DLCs will be available to buy at 1.0's launch, but the actual update itself is entirely free to those who already own the game.
