We're closing in on the tenth anniversary of League of Legends, and Riot Games has announced a massive player count milestone. The MOBA is regularly reaching eight million concurrent players at daily peaks, which makes it one of the biggest games in the world – and perhaps the biggest PC title currently out there.
"Every day we see about eight million peak concurrent players in League," Riot says in its announcement. That number covers LoL players across all Riot, Tencent, and Garena regions, and specifically s for the month of August – so if you though League was slowing down a decade after launch, it seems that's not the case.
Riot says this is "bigger than the top ten games on Steam combined," and while that kind of statement seems like hyperbole, it's actually an extreme lowball. The daily peaks for Steam's current top ten games total around 2.2 million s, and while Steam's overall count peaks at around 15 million daily, only about four million players in total are in-game on any given day, as SteamDB shows.
Minecraft player count is the biggest in the world by many metrics, but we don't know what the concurrent count looks like.
The closest PC-exclusive title is CrossFire, an FPS aimed at the Chinese market whose developers report eight million concurrent players.
If the image above looks a bit unfamiliar, don't worry, it's not just you. Riot has taken the anniversary opportunity to redesign the logo for modern times. This massive gaming institution isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
