The middle ages are well represented in strategy games, with some of the most celebrated entries to the genre including projects such as Manor Lords, Crusader Kings 3, Stronghold, and Age of Empires 2. There still seems to be plenty worth pulling from the era, though, if the launch of new Age of Empires and Total War Medieval 2-style RTS Knights of the Crusades is anything to go by. Launched on Monday, the new strategy game has already warranted solid reviews, currently holding a 95% or 'Positive' rating on Steam.
medieval game that takes place during the First Crusades. Players are able to lead forces as a Templar or as the leader of a fictionalized Holy Order drawn from the real world, launching a massive campaign that takes them from Western Europe to the cities and natural landscapes of the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe.
There's real-time combat against various armies to engage in, with sieges and naval combat included, as well as systems for capturing and building out towns in true city-builder style. Accompanying all of this is the need to maintain a supply of silver and religious devotion, which allows an army to expand across the map. Players can try their hand at scripted historical events and battles or rewrite the past as their chosen faction succeeds or fails.

Knights of the Crusades is out now in Early Access on Steam with a 20% discount that brings its price down to $15.99 USD / £12.39. Grab a copy right here.
