Think you could brave the medieval-era Scottish Highlands? What if you weren't just responsible for yourself, but your whole family? That's the challenge posed by Clanfolk, and now this 9/10 RimWorld-style colony sim has received a major new update, adding a welcome dose of freedom.
Currently in Steam Early Access, Clanfolk begins with just one family but, if you play your cards right, you'll end up in charge of a thriving Scottish colony.
It's inspired by RimWorld, but the good news is that your population should have a higher chance of survival than that title's pawns. There are no raiders rushing up to lop off their heads, bonnets and all, but the cold itself can be an enemy. Fail to prepare for winter and you could end up with a row of tartan popsicles.
Now, two-person developer MinMax Games Ltd. has added a new dimension to Clanfolk. The game's latest update not only adds 70 new items and tweaks the game pacing, it also opens up the world and allows your colonists to embark on expeditions.
As of this new update, you have access to the World Map, which enables you to send your characters far and wide. That might sound like fun and you stand to uncover taverns, inns, and other areas. MinMax Games has said these will have an even greater part in future updates.
The catch is that not only do you have to feed your expedition, while they're away they're not contributing to your colony's homestead. Will your other colonists take up the slack? Or will the travelers return home to find things in a disappointingly grim state?
The update is available now and if you've yet to play Clanfolk, it's currently 50% off on Steam, making it $14.99 / £12.49, down from $29.99 / £24.99. This offer ends on May 30.
