Blue Prince Parlor game solution

Of the three statements in the Blue Prince parlor game, there's always at least one true and one false proclamation. Using this simple fact, you can figure out which of the three boxes contains gems.

When it's not immediately obvious, the best way we've found to get the right answer every time is to reverse engineer it. Pick a box and decide that it's true. If that box is true, what does it mean for the other boxes, and which, if it works, would contain the gems? Then, go back and try it if that same box were false. We've got some examples, but there are so many that we sadly can't give you the answer for every riddle.

  • The gems are in this box (blue)
  • The gems are in a box next to this box (white)
  • The gems are in the blue box (black)
    • Open the black box

In the above example, if the black statement were true, the white and blue statements would also be true. Since at least one box must be false, this can't be right. Therefore, the black box must be lying, meaning the gems are not in the blue box. This also makes the blue box false, so the white box must be true. The black and blue boxes are both next to the white box, so, since we know the gems are not in the blue box, they must be in the black one.

Blue Prince Parlor game example 2

  • The empty boxes are both true (blue)
  • The gems are in the black box (white)
  • This is not an empty box (black)

Blue Prince Parlor game example 3

  • The gems are not in a box with a true statement (blue)
  • The statement on the blue box is as true as this statement (white)

    • The white box contains the gems
