What's the best Anime Saga character right now?
This early into the release of Anime Saga, the best character is bound to be the hardest to obtain. In of pure strength, at least, that would make it a Mythical unit like Frierin, Okorun, Zid, Chainsaw, or Doma.
As each can fill a completely different slot in your strategy, either through boss damage, debuffs, economy boosts, area damage, or general , it's hard to say which single unit is the best to invest in. Simply put, the best is whichever one you happen to have.
And while any character, be it a Mythical or Rare, will get you through the early stages of the game, your investment is likely to go much further the rarer the unit is.
Pumping rare resources into a Rare character can only get you so far. In later levels, they'll hit their peak, ultimately holding you back. Invest in a higher rarity unit from the get-go, and you'll take things much further.
It's best to save your resources until you begin to struggle, but you can always get more in a pinch with the latest Anime Saga codes.
Don't put them all into low-tier characters as soon as you get them. See how far they'll take you, then boost your characters only when you see the need to. That way, you'll have more items to use on making already great units that much better once you obtain them.
How do I get Mythical units in Anime Saga?

You can only begin pulling Mythical Anime Saga characters at level 10. It doesn't matter whether you get lucky with the 0.1% pull chance or the 250 pull Mythical pity: if you haven't reached level 10, you won't get one.
That means it makes sense to save as many of your gems as possible early on. Only pull when you absolutely need a new character and can't progress without it.
Even then, it might be worth grinding Stage 1-1 until you hit level 10 before you pull anything at all. The starter characters will get through it just fine.
